Robert “Gayle” Mercer

Flagler County Tax Collector (1961)

Mr. Mercer was a 1951 graduate of Bunnell High School. Mr. Mercer was appointed Flagler County Tax Collector by the governor in February 1961 to complete the term vacated by his father, James Mercer, when he retired.  Ironically, in his graduation yearbook, his "class prophecy" stated "Gayle Mercer is tax collector in Flagler County..."

Mr. Mercer ultimately resigned his position in November 1961 after which the governor appointed Dale Benton Brown, Jr. to complete the term.
